16 Can you learn in your sleep?

Despite claims to the contrary, you cannot learn while you’re asleep. Learning is an active process, and ’sleep learning’ accomplished by listening to a CD playing soothing but improving messages, is unfortunately a myth. There are a couple of things you can do, however. If you revise on coffee, it might be a good idea to have a coffee before the test. Also, when you learn is also crucial. We all have a biological rhythm for learning, usually it’s best to take in new information in the morning and then try to consolidate it in the afternoon. There’s an experiment you can try: learn lines of poetry at different times of the day and see which lines you can still remember later on. When you have done this, try to organise your life so that the time you set aside time for learning coincides with the time when your memory is at its best.
