29 Can animals forecast natural disasters?

There have been a lot of reports on unusual animal behaviour prior to eathquakes. However, there has been no in-depth scientific research into this phenomenon, so the skepticism of many geologists and biologists might be justified. Since, however, a scientifically tested tool is yet to be designed that would give advance warning of an impending earthquake, observation of animal behaviour might turn out to be a useful tool. We know that e.g. sharks use high or low frequency electro-receptors to detect objects and birds and fish use the Earth’s electromagnetic field as an aid to navigation and migration. Many believe that we could put this sensitivity of animals to good use and as we could detect signals, such as ’fly away’ or ’leave this place’, ehich might be crucial to survive the coming catastrophe.
