First of all, animals have a right not to be harmed. Animals
are in many ways similar to humans, sharing
the ability to ’feel’. If this is so, just as we should not hurt humans, we
should not hurt animals. Furthermore, animal research, by its very nature necessitates
harm to the animals. Even if they are not made to suffer as part of the
experiment, the vast majority of
animals used, must be killed at the
conclusion of the experiment. Also, due
to the incredible development in science and technology, now there are
alternatives to animal testing (e.g. using powerful computer to model processes), which makes animal
testing unnecessary. However, some
say that animal testing is in no way to be considered animal cruelty as it is not the intention of the researchers to
harm the animals, but rather to produce
high quality research for the betterment
of human lives. In addition,
although there are alternatives to animal testing, it is still by far the
fastest and the most reliable method of research. Besides, animal research conducted
today produces higher quality results
than alternative research methodologies.
