I’ve just read an article about the chances of
success of children growing up in different families and in different
circumstances. The article said that adversity in early childhood – in
the form of anything from poverty to physical abuse – has measurable
changes in the function of the brain and body well into adulthood,
which means that those who are affected will have worse prospects in life.
Growing up in worse socioeconomic circumstances can impair
working memory as an adult and affect the size of different parts of the brain,
so poorer children might actually perform much worse in school and in
later life. So, when we talk about equality of opportunities, it might be
important to note that this is a really complex issue where the financial
background of the family is a really important factor.
